MPPT and PWM solar charge controllers

A solar charge controller manages the energy received from the panels and applies a safe, efficient charging profile to the battery. This range includes Victron controllers for 12 V, 24 V and 48 V systems used in campervans, motorhomes, boats, CCTV, telecommunications and off-grid installations.

MPPT or PWM?

An MPPT controller tracks the panel’s maximum power point and normally makes better use of available energy when panel voltage differs from battery voltage. A PWM controller can suit a simple, correctly matched system. Selection must consider more than current: check maximum open-circuit voltage (Voc), permitted solar power and battery compatibility.

How to select the right controller

  • Battery-bank voltage: 12, 24 or 48 V.
  • Total Voc of the solar panels, including its increase in cold weather.
  • Maximum charge current and permitted PV power.
  • Charging profile for the solar battery: AGM, GEL or lithium/LiFePO4.
  • Bluetooth, monitoring or system-communication requirements.

Frequently asked question

Can the array exceed the controller’s nominal power?

Only within the oversizing limits stated for the specific model. The controller’s maximum PV voltage must never be exceeded.
