Batteries for service

Service batteries are present in motorhomes, boats, solar energy installations in homes, etc. They constitute a constant source of energy when needed.

We must differentiate service batteries from starter batteries, which They are used to start combustion engines, and traction batteries, used in vehicles and machinery with an electric motor, which supplies the energy to move.

What is a service battery?

A service battery is called that because of the use made of it, it supplies power to the electrical devices connected to it, such as household appliances, devices electronics, small motors, water pumps, air conditioning, lights, when they are not connected to the electrical grid, a generator or an alternator.

They also serve as storage of renewable energies such as solar photovoltaic and wind energy.

They are used in places and vehicles not connected to the electrical grid (generator or alternator) or they are used temporarily. In this aspect, we highlight the motorhome batteries and the boat batteries.

Types of utility batteries

  • AGM service batteries: These are lead batteries in which the electrolyte is absorbed by fiberglass. They are sealed. They are characterized by a deep discharge of 75% (recommended 50% to extend their useful life), fast charging, suitable for high power demands and they withstand low temperatures well.
  • Gel service batteries: These are lead batteries in which the electrolyte is gelled. They are sealed. They are characterized by a deep discharge of 85% (recommended between 50% and 70% to extend their useful life), the charge must be slower than AGM, they perform well with moderate and constant energy consumption, and mild temperatures. It has more charge and discharge cycles than AGM batteries.
  • Lithium service batteries: They are electrolyte-free batteries, their composition is LiFePO4, which makes them safe and stable. They are characterized by 100% deep discharge, fast charging, suitable for high power demands and resist extreme temperatures. It is lighter than AGM and Gel lead batteries and has many more charge and discharge cycles than them.
  • Conventional service batteries: These are lead batteries with free electrolyte (wet) and not sealed. They are characterized by a shallow discharge since they should not exceed 50%, the charge must be slow to avoid overheating, suitable for high energy demands for short times. It has few charge and discharge cycles. Its advantage is the lower price than the previous ones, but the installation has to be oversized even more than AGM and Gel batteries to increase its useful life.
