Portable solar generators and power stations

Portable solar generators, also known as power stations, combine a battery, power-management electronics and several outputs in one transportable unit. They provide convenient energy for campervans, camping, boats, field work, CCTV and backup without requiring a complete fixed installation.

What to compare

• Capacity in Wh: indicates how much energy the unit can store.
• Continuous and surge output: must cover connected appliances and their starting loads.
• Ports: check AC, USB, USB-C and DC outputs.
• Charging: compare charging time and compatibility with mains, vehicle and solar panels.
• Battery chemistry and cycles: consider expected service life as well as capacity.

Estimating real autonomy

Runtime depends on the load and conversion losses, not only nominal capacity. Divide approximate usable Wh by appliance wattage to estimate operating time, allowing a safety margin. For permanent or expandable systems, also compare a separate solar battery installation.
