The Victron Orion XS 70A is a 12 V to 12 V DC-DC charger for recharging an auxiliary battery from the alternator. It delivers adjustable charging up to 70 A and approximately 1,000 W at 14.3 V, with Bluetooth and VE.Direct. It suits campervan, motorhome and work-vehicle installations that need higher charging current and have an adequate power source.
Supports the following rechargeable battery technologies, provided that the bank voltage matches the charger output and the battery capacity and permitted charging current are respected.
| Technology | Compatibility and settings |
|---|---|
| Conventional flooded lead-acid / WET | Compatible with the lead-acid programme specified by the battery manufacturer. |
| AGM / VRLA | Compatible. Use the absorption and float voltages recommended for the battery; AGM batteries do not all require the same settings. |
| Gel / VRLA | Compatible with the correct gel profile and voltage limits. Avoid overvoltage and reconditioning unless authorised by the battery manufacturer. |
| LiFePO4 lithium | Compatible with the lithium/LiFePO4 profile and a suitable BMS. Do not use lead-acid equalisation or reconditioning. |
Set the unit to charger mode and select or customise the battery profile in VictronConnect. Power supply mode does not replace a correctly configured charging profile.
Not intended for non-rechargeable cells, NiMH or Ni-Cd batteries. Chemical compatibility does not mean that every capacity or voltage is suitable. For LiFePO4, also observe charging temperature limits and BMS protections.
The Orion XS 12/12-70A is a Victron 70 A booster that uses a 12 V supply to recharge the auxiliary battery while travelling. If you are looking for an Orion XS 70 or a Victron 70 A DC-DC charger, this is the 12 → 12 V version, not the XS50 or the multivoltage XS1400.
It is useful for service systems that accept higher charging current, including campervans, motorhomes and work vehicles with compatible LiFePO4 or lead-acid batteries. Before using 70 A, check the battery and BMS limits, alternator reserve and wiring. Marine applications require a suitable dry indoor location.
This model has two fans on its bottom plate. The complete unit is rated IP20 and intended for a dry interior. The power electronics have their own IP65 enclosure, but that does not make the complete charger IP65. On a boat, choose a suitable dry location and compatible installation.

Choose this booster if the battery accepts that current and the alternator can supply it without compromising the vehicle's other loads. If the battery BMS permits less charging current, set a lower limit. A high-capacity battery does not automatically accept 70 A.
The charger controls LiFePO4 and lead-acid charging with the correct profile. Charging stages include bulk, absorption, float and storage, with settings adapted to the battery. Engine detection can be adjusted for smart alternators; some Euro 6 vehicles may need an external signal.
VictronConnect lets you set limits and check charging from a compatible phone. VE.Smart receives external sensor data but does not synchronise several Orion chargers. Internet access requires a compatible GX, VE.Direct connection and VRM. DVCC requires a compatible system and BMS, Orion XS v1.03 and Venus OS v3.20 or later.
Check VictronConnect compatibility with your phone or computer and the required interface. Add a compatible battery monitor for a complete state-of-charge reading: the charger does not replace that function.
The current manual allows temporary charging of the starter battery from the auxiliary battery, up to 35 A, subject to limits and conditions. It requires Orion XS v1.15 and VictronConnect v6.43 or later. Activated in the app, it does not replace a jump starter or restore a faulty battery.
Keep the fans' air inlet unobstructed. The manual requires a non-flammable surface, flat mounting and 10 cm clearance around the unit for cooling; different orientations are permitted. The manufacturer's guidance table specifies an external 80–100 A fuse and 25 mm² cable for the stated length. The installer must check cable size, protection and routing for the actual system.
The XS70 terminals use TORK-KRIMP technology for ferrules fitted according to the manual's specific procedure. Do not apply this method automatically to other models. Lithium low-temperature protection requires battery-temperature data or the appropriate BMS control.
Is the XS70 IP65? No. The complete unit is IP20. Choose a dry indoor location.
Is it silent and fanless? It has two fans; cooling is active, not exclusively passive.
Does it replace the XS50 in any installation? Not automatically. Available current, ventilation, environmental protection and wiring requirements differ.
Does it include a solar controller or BMS? No. Those are separate functions requiring their own equipment where needed.
Can units operate in parallel? Yes, with suitable design and protection; this does not mean synchronised charging through VE.Smart.
If IP65 and fanless operation are priorities, compare the Orion XS 50A. For different nominal voltages in 12/24 V systems, see the Orion XS 1400. Complete your system with LiFePO4 batteries, battery monitors and Victron Energy equipment. Read the official XS70 manual.
Documentation: official datasheet PDF, automotive R10-7 EMC certificate in the manufacturer's download centre. EMC approval does not replace electrical and installation compatibility checks.
| Model | System and current | Selection criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Orion XS 12/12-50A | 12 → 12 V, up to 50 A | IP65 and fanless cooling. |
| Orion XS 12/12-70A 1000W | 12 → 12 V, up to 70 A | IP20, two fans and a dry indoor installation. |
| Orion XS 1400 50A | 12/24 V systems, up to 50 A | 1,400 W rated at 28 V; IP65 and natural convection. |
