The Victron Orion XS 50A, model Orion XS 12/12-50A, reference ORI121217050, uses alternator power to recharge your service battery while travelling. This 12 V to 12 V DC-DC charger regulates current and voltage in dual-battery systems. Its compact housing, Bluetooth and fanless cooling make it suitable for campervans, motorhomes, work vehicles and boats.
Supports the following rechargeable battery technologies, provided that the bank voltage matches the charger output and the battery capacity and permitted charging current are respected.
| Technology | Compatibility and settings |
|---|---|
| Conventional flooded lead-acid / WET | Compatible with the lead-acid programme specified by the battery manufacturer. |
| AGM / VRLA | Compatible. Use the absorption and float voltages recommended for the battery; AGM batteries do not all require the same settings. |
| Gel / VRLA | Compatible with the correct gel profile and voltage limits. Avoid overvoltage and reconditioning unless authorised by the battery manufacturer. |
| LiFePO4 lithium | Compatible with the lithium/LiFePO4 profile and a suitable BMS. Do not use lead-acid equalisation or reconditioning. |
Set the unit to charger mode and select or customise the battery profile in VictronConnect. Power supply mode does not replace a correctly configured charging profile.
Not intended for non-rechargeable cells, NiMH or Ni-Cd batteries. Chemical compatibility does not mean that every capacity or voltage is suitable. For LiFePO4, also observe charging temperature limits and BMS protections.
The Orion XS 12/12-50A meets both needs: it is a DC-DC battery charger, also called a booster, for controlled auxiliary-battery charging from a 12 V starter system. Reference ORI121217050 identifies the exact unit. It is neither a 230 V mains charger nor a portable jump starter.
In a campervan or motorhome, recharge the service battery while driving so it can later power compatible lighting, refrigeration and other equipment. In marine systems, it can manage service-bank charging from the starter circuit where a non-isolated charger is appropriate. In work vehicles, it helps manage auxiliary charging separately from engine-starting loads.
It controls auxiliary-battery charging rather than simply connecting it to the starter battery. Adapt the profile for LiFePO4, AGM, gel or lead-acid and limit the load on the alternator. Engine-running detection helps prevent starter-battery discharge; some Euro 6 vehicles require adjusted settings or an external signal, as explained in the manual.

Continuous output assumes adequate cooling. The adjustable 50 A maximum is not a charging current suitable for every battery.
VictronConnect lets you configure and update the charger and check its operation. Bluetooth provides local access; Internet monitoring requires a GX device connected through VE.Direct and access to VRM. VE.Smart can receive data from compatible battery sensors, but does not synchronise charging between Orion XS units.
DVCC requires Orion XS firmware v1.03 and Venus OS v3.20 or later, together with compatible GX and BMS connections. The charger does not contain a battery BMS or replace a battery monitor's state-of-charge measurement.
With Orion XS firmware v1.15 and VictronConnect v6.43 or later, energy can be transferred from the auxiliary battery to the starter battery. The maximum is 25 A, subject to configured limits. The sequence includes 15 minutes of charging followed by 5 minutes of stabilisation. It is not an instant jump starter and cannot guarantee recovery of a faulty battery.
Choose the XS50 when both circuits are 12 V and the battery, BMS, alternator and wiring support the selected current. It has no galvanic isolation: where the project requires electrical separation between input and output, consider an isolated alternative.
The manual specifies vertical mounting with terminals facing down, a non-flammable mounting surface and at least 10 cm clearance around the unit. Size cables, fuses and tightening torques for the cable length and installation conditions. IP65 does not mean suitable for immersion.
The configurable lithium low-temperature cut-off requires battery-temperature data shared by compatible equipment. Do not assume the Orion itself knows the battery's internal temperature. Where a BMS controls charging, its control conditions apply.
Can it charge a 100 or 200 Ah lithium battery? Yes, if voltage, charging profile and permitted current are suitable; capacity in Ah alone does not determine compatibility.
Does it replace a solar controller? No. It charges from another DC system; solar panels require their own controller.
Can several units increase charging capacity? Yes, with a correctly sized parallel installation. This is not the same as synchronised charging through VE.Smart.
What is included? The manual lists the charger and remote on/off terminal block. Check the required wiring and accessories separately.
