The Victron Battery Balancer
The Victron Battery Balancer, as the names indicates, balances the charge status of batteries typicallly connected in series (i.e.,a two series-connected 12V batteries) or groups of parallel cells connected in series.
Individual cells in a battery pack have slightly different capacities and may be at different states of charge over the duration of charge/discharge cycles. Capacity variations are caused by manufacturing, assembly, cell aging, impurities, or environmental exposure, and can be compounded by the cumulative impact of parasitic loads, such as the cell monitoring circuitry commonly included in a battery management system (BMS).
Balancing a multi-cell pack with the Victron Battery Balancer helps attempting to retain maximize capacity and life-cycle of the pack by similar state-of-charge of all cells throughout the largest feasible range, given their varying capacities. Only packs with several cells in series require balancing. Because parallel cells are physically linked, they will naturally balance; however, groups of parallel cells connected in series (parallel-series wiring) must be balanced among cell groups.
When the charge voltage of a 24V battery system surpasses 27V, for example, the Victron Battery Balancer activates and compares the voltage across two series-connected batteries. The Battery Balancer may draw up to 1A of power from the battery or batteries connected in parallel with the highest voltage. The resulting variance in charge current assures that all batteries attain the same charge state.
If necessary, many balancers can be paralleled; for example, three Victron Battery Balancers can be used to balance a 48V battery bank.
LED colours indicators:
- Green: active (battery voltage > 27.3 V)
- Orange: lowest battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1 V)
- Orange: Highest battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1 V)
- Red: Alarm (deviation > 0.2V) Will remain set until the deviation decreases to less than 0.14V, or until the system voltage drops to less than 26.6V.
