Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-32 (IP 67) Galvanic Isolator 

The galvanic isolator Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-32 (IP 67),designed to keep electrolytic deterioration at bay, feautures a 32A of maximum current and a peak current (20 ms) of 3200A and IP 67 waterproof (potted) protection. It prevents low voltage DC currents from entering your boat through the shore power ground cable. These currents can corrode the undersea metals of the boat, such as the propeller, hull, shaft, etc.

Internally, the Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-32 (IP 67) is made up of two diodes that are coupled in an anti-parallel way. When linked in this manner, the diodes allow current in both directions but only above a specified voltage threshold. Diodes conduct at a voltage of roughly 1.4 Vdc.

The Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-32 (IP 67) is put right on the back of the 230V connector on your yacht. The galvanic isolator's forward voltage is greater than the potential difference between metals. As a consequence, this voltage will not enable conduction and, as a result, any electrolytic current will be prevented by the galvanic isolator. However, if the AC circuit has a higher error voltage, the diodes will allow current through while the residual-current device will destroy the circuit.

For safe and safety reasons the galvanic isolator has to be plugged into the grounding conducting connection ahead of any grounding connections to the vessel so that no ground connections on the vessel bypass the galvanic isolator, rendering it useless.
